I typically get a download speed of around 5100cps on a Aminet
download with Twister MK2 and Magic Express 56k modem.
One thing I found very important to the speed was not having both the
Auto flow control in Twister prefs and the RTS/CTS flow control in
Genesis prefs turned on at the same time. By turning either option off
my download rate doubled. I chose to keep the Auto flow control on and
turn off the RTS/CTS.
I've recently switched to using Miami for it's SSL. Unfortuanatley
Miami dosen't let you turn off RTS/CTS so i've now turned off the Auto
flow control instead.
I also found using the VJ compression made a difference of about
1000cps. For some reason i'd had it turned off in Genesis.

Thanks
